My journey into tech could not have been possible without my father. Without this man, I don’t even know if I would be where I am today. He is my inspiration, my emotional support, and my greatest advisor. Where it all began... I had a crush on computers and technology ever since my high school years and this admiration blossomed into a passion when I joined university.
When I joined campus I applied for financial engineering however and never found the fulfillment I thought I would get. And this realization was the turning point for me.IT for me was like that one guy who is obsessed with you and won’t stop until you fall for them and say yes. Within no time I quit business school and switched to IT - a decision that I have never looked back on.
I first joined a boot camp- Moringa school and took a sabbatical from school. It was all excitement and passion at this time, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was as green as they came, a blank page ready to bring a beautiful story to life.
My first language was Javascript and man did I float in this one. I loved python and ended up being a backend developer when I graduated. Got my first full-time job in a Canadia-based company four months after graduating from Moringa School. One year down the line I founded my own company which won the best solution in the African Impact Initiative Challenge. We also got nominated for best upcoming startup in East Africa 2023 by Global Startup Awards. Just to mention a few.
Ever since I decided to follow my passions and challenge myself I have seen immense growth in my personality, my knowledge, and of course my lifestyle. I also got support and encouragement along the way from the tech bros and the tech communities. Despite it seeming like an overnight success, I made a lot of sacrifices along the way, battled work-related stress and the obvious... imposter syndrome. I am still learning and my story is far from over I hope that I can continue to inspire and empower other women who tech across the world.
Girls .... if men can do it so can we. The tech industry is for everyone. You don't need to fit a certain mold or have a certain personality type. Just be yourself and keep learning. This is an industry where everyone can thrive, regardless of gender. Don't let anyone hold you back especially yourself from pursuing your dreams and making a difference in the world.
Here's to the women who tech - may you continue to break barriers, shatter glass ceilings, and inspire the next generation of tech trailblazers. Keep pushing forward, and never forget the impact you're making on the world. ~ Myself
